Local Water Done Well

As the water sector reform progresses, the challenge now is not just planning delivery models, it’s securing the workforce capability to make them work.

Water Reform Is Moving Fast – Can Workforce Capability Keep Up?

Local Water Done Well is reshaping how water services will be delivered across New Zealand.

But one question is becoming increasingly important for councils and emerging water entities:

Do we have the technical capability needed for what comes next?

With Local Water Done Well now underway, councils across the country are determining how drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services will be delivered in the future.

Across the sector, communities have chosen different delivery models from multi-council water organisations and single-council water CCOs to enhanced in-house delivery models.

Regardless of the model adopted, organisations must now demonstrate that they can maintain assets, fund renewals, invest in and deliver infrastructure upgrades, meet regulatory standards, service debt obligations, and respond to future growth pressures.

In practice, that is likely to drive increased demand for technical capability across:

           operations and maintenance

           engineering

asset management, planning and infrastructure strategy

           regulatory and compliance

           capital delivery and project management

We expect to see continued growth in technical recruitment activity across the sector, with councils, water entities and consultancies increasingly competing for the same scarce skills.

Historically, periods of heightened demand for specialist infrastructure capability in New Zealand have also resulted in increased recruitment from overseas talent markets. For newly established organisations, achieving Immigration New Zealand employer accreditation may quickly shift from a “nice to have” to a strategic priority.

As Local Water Done Well moves from policy into implementation, workforce capability may become one of the sector’s defining challenges over the next decade. Organisations that secure the right technical expertise early may hold a significant advantage as implementation accelerates and competition for talent intensifies.

If you’re involved in workforce planning, capability development or talent acquisition within the water sector, we’d welcome a confidential conversation to better understand the specific challenges your organisation faces and share perspective and insight from across the wider infrastructure market.

Peak Recruitment has a 15-year history of supporting councils and council-controlled organisations across New Zealand with the technical recruitment needed to keep water services operating and infrastructure programmes moving. We specialise in sourcing technical professionals who plan, operate, maintain and deliver critical water infrastructure.

How is your organisation preparing for the capability requirements of Local Water Done Well?

          #Thrive2026.

Highlights included Martin Simpson, GM of Fraser Engineering Group, sharing the inspiring journey of taking world-class, life-saving fire trucks from New Zealand to the global stage – ambitious, authentic, and delivered with great humour.

It was also a privilege to hear from Professor Jarrod Haar, who spoke on the grit, resilience, satisfaction and performance that can come with experience later in one’s career – reinforcing the value of employing and retaining baby boomers within our organisations.

Jenny Turner’s session on harnessing neurodiversity was another standout, encouraging reflection on the strengths that come from different ways of thinking and working.

The panel discussion on leading teams during and after a disaster was equally powerful – honest, practical, and inspiring.

          A great event all round.

          Why you chose NZ

After hearing stories and testimonies from friends, we were very intrigued with the work-life balance is in New Zealand. Upon further research about NZ, we were mesmerised with how beautiful the country is, and how it prioritises family first. This became the motivation for us to emigrate to NZ, especially when our daughter is about to go to school. And it didn’t disappoint, it exceeded everything that we expected.

The most challenging part from our experience is being ready and at peace that we will be leaving our beloved country and will have to start a new life abroad. This is the first time that we considered working and living outside the Philippines, and we had to make sure that we are truly committed to this. Aside from this, gathering all the necessary documents gave us a bit of a hard time. School and government records are a bit difficult to apply for and takes a long time to obtain.

Despite the difficulty in obtaining the required documents, every step we took was pretty straight forward. The NZ visa application is done completely online, and all instructions are detailed clearly. Everything is set conveniently for the applicants, and correspondence is immediately sent through email should additional information/documents be required.

NZ is such a beautiful country. People are very friendly and are always willing to help you out. After living here for more than a year now, we’ve learned to appreciate the simplicity of life in NZ, especially here in Hamilton. Living in a small city is right how we wanted it to be. No traffic, easy going lifestyle, everything is nearby, and the luxury of having a lot of time to spend with our daughter even during weekdays which we didn’t have where we came from.

New Zealand is a well-known tourist destination renowned for its picturesque landscapes, amazing beaches, and beautiful mountains. With our location in central North Island, a lot of these tourist spots are just a few hours’ drive from our home.

Peak Recruitment was very helpful right from the very start. The initial interview went very well, and they made sure that I was well suited for the position. They also ensured that I understood everything that I am getting into and left no stone unturned in giving all the information that I needed. Their experience and expertise in helping people migrate to NZ was very evident throughout the process. All the information they provided was exactly what we needed to make sure everything went smoothly and fast.

Moving to New Zealand is quite a big decision to make. You must do your research about how living in New Zealand is, as it may be far from what you are used to and what your expectations are. You will have your doubts, fear, but trust me, it will all be worth it. I am glad we’ve made the decision to make New Zealand our new home.

Moving to New Zealand had been a lifelong goal of mine. My first impression of the country came through sport—I was drawn to the passion, unity, and national pride shown at sporting events. Over time, I became increasingly interested in New Zealand’s landscape and way of life. Like many South Africans, I saw New Zealand as a country where we could thrive as a family: one with low crime, quality education, excellent healthcare, and strong communities.

          The part Peak played

Our journey began in August 2022, soon after New Zealand’s borders reopened post-COVID. I applied for a role with a civil engineering consulting firm in Hamilton, with Peak Recruitment managing the process. Right from the start, the experience was professional and supportive. The interview questions were relevant to the role, and Peak went out of their way to accommodate time zone differences for both me and my referees.

I was fortunate to be shortlisted, and in September 2022, I received the news that I had secured the role and was eligible for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). Peak remained engaged throughout the visa process—providing useful resources and checking in regularly. They couldn’t offer immigration advice (as required by NZ law), but their help and encouragement made the entire process more manageable.

          Most challenging part

We chose to complete the visa applications ourselves, without using an immigration agent. Immigration New Zealand’s website was a great help, but it was stressful not having a case officer to speak to. All communication was online, and we had to check the portal regularly for updates or further information requests.

One of the biggest logistical challenges after arriving was opening a bank account. Most banks operate by appointment only, and you need a functioning bank account to apply for an IRD (tax) number – which is needed before you can be paid. It took several days to get that sorted.

Finding a rental property was even more difficult. Because school zoning determines eligibility for enrolment, we had to secure a home within the right catchment. Properties in these zones were scarce, and when they did become available, we were competing with 15 to 40 other couples at each viewing. The process was tedious and more difficult again if you have pets, as most rentals don’t allow them.

Surprisingly, some things were very easy. Converting our driver’s licences was simple – thanks to recognised equivalency with South Africa and accessible agencies offering on-the-spot eye tests.

We were also able to access vehicle finance and services like Afterpay fairly quickly, which helped us establish a local credit history.

We arrived in January 2023 during peak summer, and were immediately struck by the country’s beauty, cleanliness, and friendliness. Everything we had hoped for about New Zealand proved to be true. The transition was smooth, and we quickly became familiar with shopping centres, healthcare services, and local transport options.

It’s now been nearly two years since we made the move, and we still feel incredibly fortunate to be here. New Zealand has become home, and we’re thriving as a family.

We continue to enjoy everything New Zealand has to offer—from its oceans, forests, and caves to the everyday scenery visible from the roadside. There’s something deeply peaceful about the pace of life and connection to nature here.

          Any surprises

The biggest surprise was how little communication we received from Immigration New Zealand during the visa process. Without a dedicated case officer or email updates, it was up to us to keep checking the portal for updates. That lack of transparency added to the stress of an already complex process. On the positive side, we were surprised by how friendly and helpful New Zealanders are—we had heard this before arriving, but it exceeded expectations.

          Advice to others considering NZ

If you’re considering a move to New Zealand, my biggest piece of advice is to thoroughly familiarise yourself with the Immigration NZ website. Their information is current, accurate, and easy to follow—but you’ll need to be proactive and patient. Let the process run its course and prepare for some uncertainty along the way.

It’s absolutely worth it. New Zealand is a remarkable place to live and raise a family, and we’re grateful every day to be here.

I relocated with my wife from Zimbabwe to New Zealand in 2023. I arrived in New Zealand mid-April 2023.

          Why NZ?

The reasons for my relocation to New Zealand include the following:

Work-Life balance – The New Zealand lifestyle promotes a healthy work-life balance. After our research we opted for New Zealand because it matched what my wife and I wanted. New Zealand promotes family engagement. As we are building our family, we felt New Zealand is a perfect fit for us.

Pathway to Residency – The skilled migrant category was appealing for us, and we managed to gain New Zealand Residency within one year from our date of arrival.

Environmental Sustainability – The main planning framework upholds environmental consciousness. We prioritise eco-friendly living and we found New Zealand to be a perfect fit for us.

Peace of Mind – Generally New Zealand is a safe country to live in and gives a secure living environment and peacefulness. This contributed to us choosing New Zealand.

Cultural Diversity – The availability of multiple cultures in New Zealand led us to choose this country as we felt it would be easier for us to integrate.

On my journey to New Zealand, the most challenging part was to obtain a job offer. Peak Recruitment played a pivotal role in securing a job offer in this country. There was a five-month gap between my first interview with Peak Recruitment and the second interview with my employer. I believe it was also due to the government requirements for employing someone from overseas.

I consider settling in New Zealand to be the easiest part. The people of New Zealand are welcoming. It made us integrate well and feel at home. People at work are welcoming and they promote teamwork. Setting up basic utilities was an easy and straightforward process.

When we first arrived in New Zealand, we were stunned by the natural beauty of the country. The beautiful landscapes, the green hills, and the beautiful beaches. We felt welcomed by the airport crew and individuals we met when we reached our destination. We were also surprised by a rainy winter. We never experienced rain in winter before. We are enjoying the options we were offered to work remotely.

Peak Recruitment played a big role in my journey. The organisation assisted in getting me document ready. I remember during my interview with Peak, Fiona went through all the documents that I needed to have that would help in my visa application. Due to December Holidays and backlogs, my visa approval was delayed. Vivienne played an important role in following up with Immigration New Zealand until the visa was issued. Vivienne also gave me insights on what to expect in New Zealand. Vivienne also assisted in asking my organisation’s HR department if there were opportunities there and within our town for my wife. My wife later found a job at my workplace six months after we arrived. She also found work within a month from the day we arrived.

To those considering moving to New Zealand, I advise you to continue looking for opportunities. New Zealand is a fun place to live and work in. The work life balance is amazing. The people are loving and caring. I advise everyone to be document ready and have appealing LinkedIn profiles (as I was advised by Fiona).

We’ve been surprised at how easy it was to adjust to living in New Zealand. The boys settled in well at school, and my wife just started working as a Montessori teacher. Plus, there’s so much to explore here, which has made the transition smoother.

I chose New Zealand due to its calm and relaxed lifestyle, as well as its stunning natural beauty. The decision to move was driven by a desire to enjoy a high quality of life and immerse myself in a beautiful and welcoming environment.

One of the most significant challenges I faced was securing a job from overseas and being shortlisted for an interview. Fortunately, the job opportunity with Gisborne District Council, which I was keenly interested in, was advertised through Peak Recruitment. Their pre-interview process was incredibly thorough and insightful. They recognized that the planner role available in New Zealand closely matched my previous experience in Sri Lanka. The first year in New Zealand came with its own set of challenges as I adjusted to a new environment. Although the transition was not always easy, the ongoing support from Peak Recruitment and my colleagues here made the process much more manageable.

From the outset, Peak Recruitment provided exceptional support. They guided me through the complexities of the visa process, ensuring that I met all requirements efficiently. Despite encountering obstacles, such as my flight being cancelled due to Cyclone Gabrielle, Peak Recruitment remained in constant communication, offering valuable guidance and assistance every step of the way.

Beyond their role in facilitating my job application and interview, Peak Recruitment went above and beyond by assisting with other aspects of my relocation. They provided invaluable guidance on booking accommodation, arranging domestic transportation, and ensuring that I had all the necessary resources to settle in smoothly. Their dedication and comprehensive support were truly impressive.

A month after my arrival, my family joined me, and we have since enjoyed exploring North Island. As a family that loves to travel, we have had the pleasure of visiting numerous places and experiencing the rich Māori culture.

We have been fortunate to make many new friends, particularly within the Māori community, and have found the local people to be exceptionally warm and welcoming. The staff at Gisborne District Council have been particularly supportive, creating a positive work environment that has greatly enhanced my job satisfaction. Their willingness to engage in extra activities and provide support has made my work experience extremely rewarding.

My three daughters have also benefited from our move. They have made wonderful friends from various parts of the world, which has provided them with a valuable opportunity to understand and appreciate different cultures. Despite initial challenges with the New Zealand accent, their teachers offered exceptional support, helping them adjust and thrive in their new environment.

I chose New Zealand because of its incredible natural beauty, high quality of life, and the appealing work-life balance. I was seeking a fresh start and new challenges in my professional life, and New Zealand’s growing industries seemed like the perfect fit. The idea of living in a place known for its friendly and welcoming people made the decision even easier.

          Most challenging part

The most challenging part of the transition was navigating the immigration process and adjusting to the different work culture. While the Peak Recruitment team provided immense support, there were still moments of uncertainty and anxiety about settling into a new country. Learning the local slang and getting used to the accent also took some time.

The easiest part was integrating into the New Zealand work environment. Thanks to Peak Recruitment, I was matched with a job that suited my skills and interests perfectly. The team at my new workplace was incredibly supportive and made me feel at home from day one. Additionally, Kiwis are very approachable, which made building professional relationships easy.

My first impression of New Zealand was overwhelmingly positive. The landscapes were even more stunning in person, and the cities were clean and well-organized. People were incredibly kind and helpful, which made the initial phase of my transition smooth and welcoming

Eighteen months in, I can confidently say that moving to New Zealand was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I feel deeply connected to the community, have made lasting friendships, and continue to explore this beautiful country. My career has also progressed well, thanks to the supportive environment and opportunities provided by Peak Recruitment. Recently, my spouse and I applied for our residency visas and are eagerly awaiting the outcome. I’m enjoying the balance between work and personal life here. The outdoor activities are endless – from hiking and beach outings to exploring local markets and festivals. I also appreciate the strong sense of community and the emphasis on sustainability and environmental conservation in everyday life.

One of the biggest surprises was how quickly I adapted to the New Zealand way of life. The supportive community and the inclusive culture made the transition much smoother than I anticipated. I was also pleasantly surprised by the diverse culinary scene and the thriving arts and culture sector.

Peak Recruitment played a pivotal role in my successful transition. They provided comprehensive support throughout the recruitment process, from visa guidance to settling in. Their team was always available to answer my questions and provide reassurance during uncertain times. Peak’s dedication to matching me with a job that aligned with my skills and career goals was instrumental in my smooth integration into New Zealand life.

Why did you decide to study engineering?

In high school I was a drama major who was also good at math and science. A guidance counsellor pulled me aside and asked what my plans were for after graduation. He was not impressed with my lack of answer and insisted that I sign up for a job shadowing opportunity with a petroleum engineer. I spent a day following Dave from Gulf Canada in downtown Calgary as he went about his day. I could see myself doing this and he assured me that if I liked math and science I could. I had never met anyone like him before. I was a child of Portuguese immigrants who left Portugal in the 1960s due to political unrest and I would be the first in my family to attend university. Engineering was not part of my vocabulary, and I am forever thankful that I was given this opportunity. So, I signed up for engineering in the fall of 1991 at the University of Calgary and have no regrets.

          What are your career highlights?

In British Columbia, I designed a pilot project of placing geophones in offsetting vertical wells to capture microseismic data to understand how varying hydraulic fracturing parameters can affect fracking and well performance. It was the first time this was done in Canada. Completed the first multi-stage fracture treatment in a horizontal well drilled into a conventional reservoir, the Falher in Northern Alberta.

Why did you decide to study engineering?

Engineering has always felt like a natural path for me. My father, an electrical engineer, was a guiding influence who nurtured my interest in problem-solving from an early age. I was also raised in a family of engineers across various disciplines—civil, chemical, mechanical, and electronics. Their passion and achievements inspired me to follow a similar journey. I’ve always been intrigued by how structures come to life and motivated by the idea of creating solutions that improve safety, connectivity, and everyday life.

          What are your career highlights?

One standout moment in my career was working on the Panguil Bay Bridge in the Philippines, a 3km-link between culturally diverse regions. As a child, I would hear stories about this dream project, never imagining I’d one day help bring it to life. I also contributed to the feasibility and design of the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge, one of the Philippines’ most ambitious mega-bridge projects. Today, I carry that same purpose with me as a Development Engineer in New Zealand, delivering infrastructure that drives local growth and strengthens communities.

Which countries have you worked in?

I began my career in the Philippines, delivering major infrastructures that supported national development. Now, I’m based in New Zealand, helping a district council deliver smart, practical infrastructure for growing communities. Working in both countries has sharpened my technical edge and strengthened my belief that good engineering can change lives – no matter where in the world you are.

Have You Found Your Unicorn?

Struggling to find the perfect Technical Specialist? Unicorns may not exist, but top talent does. Partner with Peak to bridge skill gaps & build your dream team

Some of our clients tell us they are looking for a unicorn – a rare, perfect Technical Specialist – and ask us to let them know if we find one. If only it were that simple.

While we all know unicorns don’t exist, Technical Specialists do. However, our experience tells us that these specialists rarely make themselves known. Unearthing and identifying them takes time, effort and commitment.

Succession planning, specialist projects, bid winning CVs and many other business growth strategies highlight the need for specialist skills, yet many companies sit back and wait, sometimes for years, for the perfect Technical Specialist to appear, rather than grow their own.

This highlights that technical skills specific to job roles remains a top priority followed closely by what we identify as our soft (human) skills, and both are essential to support the growth and development of organisations. Interestingly, the scarcity of skills (91%) and development of skills (89%), are the top two reasons given for being unable to secure the skills organisations require. 60% of respondents expect the skills gap will stay the same or worsen over the next five years.

Sealing the Deal: How to Secure Your Top Candidate

Top talent moves fast—does your hiring process? Avoid common pitfalls with Peak Recruitment’s expert guidance to secure the right candidate every time

In today’s environment, landing the right candidate isn’t just about identifying talent – it’s about ensuring your offer crosses the finish line. At Peak Recruitment, we know that even the strongest recruitment processes can face challenges at the final stage.

Common pitfalls include starting the recruitment process without key decisions made, slow communication, out of step salary or a process that just takes too long. These missteps often result in candidates accepting other offers or staying with their current employers.

Conversely, successful hiring processes share a few key traits: fast, decisive action; clear, consistent communication; and a personalised approach from the employer.

Direct engagement with candidates, seamless collaboration with Peak Recruitment, and proactive handling of potential hurdles – like salary, visa issues or partner employment – can make all the difference. Employers who confidently sell their company culture, maintain momentum, and involve us in the offer process significantly increase their chances of securing top talent.

In recruitment, speed, communication, and a partnership approach aren’t just nice-to-haves – they’re the keys to success.

From the USA to a new life in NZ

Read about one candidate's relocation experience from the USA to New Zealand.

          Why you chose NZ

In 2023, my family and I came to New Zealand on vacation to tour the South Island. We had a fantastic time and were deeply impressed by both the natural beauty of the region and the friendliness of the people we encountered. Complete strangers even invited us to join them for dinner – something we weren’t accustomed to in the U.S.

Shortly after returning home to the U.S., my wife and son expressed a strong desire to return and suggested we consider moving here. Initially, I didn’t take it seriously, but the idea kept coming up. From what I had heard, I believed it was very difficult for foreigners to relocate. For several months, my wife researched the process and kept an eye out for new job opportunities. One day, an advertisement from Peak Recruitment for a hydraulic engineer position caught my interest. I applied and was surprised to hear back a few days later. After several interviews, I received an offer. I was confident that the new position would be a good fit, so we decided to pursue it.

          First impressions

We are currently in our fourth month of living in Queenstown. Our initial impressions of New Zealand have been overwhelmingly positive.

          Any surprises

While the beauty and opportunities here have met our expectations, there have been a few surprises. For instance, we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly we adjusted to the slower pace of life. The emphasis on work-life balance and outdoor activities has been refreshing. My son, who had to adjust to wearing a uniform to school, now seems to prefer it.

          Most challenging part

One of the most challenging aspects of our move was, of course, informing our families that we were leaving the country. However, they understand and are already planning visits. Relocating two small dogs also proved to be a much more difficult task than I had expected, but they both arrived safely and are also adjusting well.

          Easiest part

Interestingly, the aspects of our transition that I anticipated would be the most challenging turned out to be the easiest. I feel very fortunate to have found a good job so readily, and the visa process went surprisingly smoothly.

          The role Peak played

I credit the ease of our transition to the role Peak Recruitment played in our relocation process. Their support and guidance made navigating the complexities of our move much smoother, and we are incredibly grateful for their assistance. They provided great advice and went so far as to meet with us one-on-one to discuss the school system and how to register for classes.

          What you’re enjoying

One of the highlights of our new life has been exploring the skiing opportunities. The slopes here are fantastic, and we’ve quickly become fans of the Nordic Skiing at Snowfarm. We’ve also been making new friends and connecting with several other families. It’s been interesting learning the new culture(s) and enjoy each other’s company.

          Advice to others considering NZ

For anyone considering a move to New Zealand, my advice is to embrace the adventure with an open mind. The initial challenges are worth the incredible experiences and opportunities that await. New Zealand is a place that feels like home, and I’m confident you’ll find it just as welcoming and beautiful as we have.

We chose New Zealand looking for a quieter and safer place to raise our then 4-yr old son Rafael, connect with nature and enjoy a more balanced lifestyle. We also wanted to gain international experience in our careers.

Start over again in our lives. We left behind our personal and professional network, family and friends. In New Zealand, we had to start from scratch and this has been quite challenging for us as a family, specially the first 6 months or so. We felt overwhelmed sometimes, and often having thoughts whether if it was a good decision to make this change.

The onboarding process to my new job was quite smooth since the very moment I received the job offer back in Chile. They took care of every detail regarding the relocation, and even one of my Latin American colleagues was with his wife waiting for us at the Wellington airport and helped us with the first hours around our new city.

People in NZ are very friendly and very aware of their community and environment. The natural environment is quite unique, you can find rivers and mountains everywhere you go.

With the support of my company, 10 months after arriving in NZ we were already residents under the skilled migrant scheme, and this has been a boost to us as a family as we were able to access a wider range of options to achieve our goals. We also joined a catholic community in Lower Hutt where we have met other Latin American families in similar situations as ours, and this has helped us to expand our social network.

Travelling and experience the outdoors and the uncrowded places. We’ve travelled a lot around the region and within the North Island as well avoiding the larger cities. I’ve been in the South Island for work, and we appreciate to be part of this impressive natural environment.

One of my first field trips was to Nelson, 2 months after arriving in NZ. When I got in the plane, I noticed in one of the front seats two little girls were travelling alone with some identification tags. I shared these with the Company manager and he explained me that during the school holidays is usual to see kids travelling alone to visit family. I think this reflects the whole NZ community-focused lifestyle. Now for me it’s natural to see 5 or 6 yr old kids walk to and from school everyday by themselves.

Since we first got in touch, they checked my background and arrange a call with Lisa by the end of August 2022. I felt very confident sharing my profile with her, explaining what I was looking for and my special interest for Dams and Hydropower. It was a relaxed but very professional conversation. After discussing some of the current available options, she was able to match my experience with a different company specialized in the Dam Safety sector, and after some interviews I finally got a generous job offer with relocation coverage. Her ability to do this match was very valuable.

Afterwards, Peak team kept in touch through Vivienne, giving us useful advice regarding the immigration process, the first steps to settle in NZ and always open to help during the transition so they really connected with me and my family, for which we are grateful.

If your skillset is aligned with NZ needs and enjoy a well-balanced lifestyle with a supportive environment, I’d encourage you to explore the opportunities that this beautiful country has to offer, the transition might be challenging but is part of a larger process. And don’t think only in the major cities, there are plenty of regional cities that are also very attractive for the engineering market.

Read about one candidate's relocation experience from Singapore to New Zealand.

          Why you chose NZ

I chose New Zealand for its beautiful landscapes, high quality of life, and excellent opportunities for both professional and personal growth. Since we have kids, the reputation for being welcoming, family friendly and having a balanced education system were also significant factors in our decision.

          Most challenging part

Adjusting to the cultural differences and navigating the job market were initially challenging.

Understanding local customs and building a network from scratch required considerable effort.

          Easiest part

The easiest part was settling into the community. Kiwis are incredibly friendly and supportive, which made it easier for my family and me to adapt quickly. I joined a local football club within a month of arriving!

          First impressions of NZ

Since we have family in NZ, the experience was not new to us. But the natural beauty of the country, coupled with the warmth of its people, have always made a positive impression on us.

          4 months in

4 months into our move, we felt more settled and started to establish a routine. The initial challenges began to ease as we became more familiar with our surroundings and the local way of life.

          What you’re enjoying

We are thoroughly enjoying the outdoor lifestyle that New Zealand offers. From hiking to exploring the beautiful coastlines, there is always something to do. Additionally, the quality of life and work-life balance here is exceptional.

          Any surprises

One surprise was that winter in Auckland has been colder than we expected. Probably because we came from a tropical climate and not really used to the seasons.

          The part Peak played:

Peak Recruitment was instrumental in helping me secure employment. Your guidance and support throughout the recruitment process were invaluable. You were assuring, patient and had no qualms answering any doubts or questions I had.

          Advice to others considering NZ

To anyone considering a move to New Zealand, I would say embrace the adventure. Be open to learning and adapting to a new culture. Also, take advantage of the support networks available, including recruitment agencies like Peak, to help you navigate the transition.

Is your cover letter working for you?

Grab some tips on writing an effective cover letter.

Call me a traditionalist, but I still value (and read) a cover letter when it’s included with a job application. It’s your chance to show us a glimpse of your personality and to answer any questions your CV might raise.

          Be Concise:

Make it short and to the point.

          Personal Touch:

Avoid relying on AI to write it for you, the results are usually generic and impersonal.

          Highlight your Motivation:

Explain what it is about this job that grabbed your attention.

We want to get to know you and to find out what makes you tick. Don’t waste your opportunity to make a strong impression.

Recruiting beyond the city limits

We love working with companies who are recruiting into the regions of New Zealand, although this is not without challenges. Here's some tips on making it work. If we can help make it easier for you, let us know.

Attracting talent to regional New Zealand can be a challenge. Read on to uncover tips, tricks & strategies to help attract top talent to your regional organisation.

          Run a slick recruitment process.

Your recruitment process speaks volumes about the way your business functions. You only get one chance to make a first impression, so ensure your process is an efficient experience for your potential new employees. Paramount to this is having the right people involved in your recruitment process. Who are the ambassadors and decision makers for your organisation and your location? Ensure you have these people on your recruitment panel.

          Enhance your employer branding.

Employer branding goes beyond your company’s external brand image. Employer branding is what your employees and candidates think about you as an employer. It influences their decision to join, stay or leave your organisation.

          What motivates your candidates?

Understand what factors drive your candidates and customise your offerings to suit. Create a workplace culture that is relaxed, social and family friendly. Develop a career roadmap for employees so they know they have a future with your organisation. Consider offering a relocation allowance and temporary accommodation to remove the financial disincentive of relocating. Embrace workplace flexibility through initiatives like remote work options, flexible work hours, and job sharing.

          Location & lifestyle.

Think about what you can offer employees over city living. For example, is your office five minutes from the beach? Does your staff room have a beautiful countryside view? Is property really affordable? Think about the lifestyle that candidates could have and sell that, as well as the job opportunity.

          Widen the net.

Make your advertisement as inclusive as possible. Be open minded and open the door to people from all walks of life and all stages of life. This increases your chance of attracting candidates with great potential who will thrive in the position. Also, stay connected with employees who leave your organisation. Maintaining these relationships will make it more likely they will return to the region and to your organisation when the time is right for them.

Partnering with a recruitment agency can be particularly beneficial in remote areas where the talent pool may be limited. Agencies often have a broader reach and can tap into networks you may not have access to. They will help you identify what the candidates’ drivers are, and help you run a tight recruitment process so that you appoint the right person who will thrive in your role.

Is your CV working for you?

Grab some tips on getting the most out of your CV.

Checking out job boards and dusting off your CV is generally the first step of the job search. But does your CV reveal your skills and experience or is it a laundry list of ‘buzz words’ that you hope will attract a response.

Having been in the recruitment industry for well over 20 years, I find myself frequently advising candidates to make changes and additions to their CV to better represent their experience. Your CV can be the first impression you give a hiring manager or recruiter, and according to ‘Google’,

          six to eight seconds

is the average time taken to review resume information before making a yes or no decision. So how do you make your CV stand out? My recommendation would be to spend as much care and effort when developing your CV as you would when sitting your final exams; well maybe that’s a step too far… but you get where I am going! Your career is your future and documenting your skills and expertise in your CV is an important part of a successful job search. I review technical CVs on a daily basis, and I look out for a well written profile, a well-documented chronological work history, starting with your current or most recent job, your responsibilities, education, and key skills and achievements. It is important to double, and triple check your document for typos, spelling, and grammatical errors, and remember to always include your contact details.

There are so many examples and templates online, which give a starting point, then it’s over to you to showcase ‘who you are’ and ‘what you offer’.

          Happy Job hunting.
Embracing Regional Living: Discover the perks!

Discover the perks of living outside our main centres.

When talking to job seekers about their preferred locations in New Zealand, we often hear their desire for a big city, but here’s why you should consider regional NZ. Living in the regions brings a mountain of benefits depending on what’s important to you. For me, it’s the uncrowded beaches and not having to queue at the boat ramp!

If you’re hanging out for sunshine, you’ll want to consider Taranaki, Nelson-Tasman, Marlborough, Timaru and the West Coast. These regions enjoy about 2500 sunshine hours per year, that’s an average of 7 hrs per day – more than enough to grow a fabulous vegie garden! You’ll also have time to weed that vegie garden due to the work/life balance that can be achieved. If walking is your thing, then don’t overlook Southland – half of NZs great walks are there. In fact, regional living means that you can have that mountain, vineyard, beach, lake or ski field right on your doorstep.

The regions offer lower house prices and the potential to own a larger property than in the big city. The relaxed pace of life and sense of community are enticing factors for those seeking a lifestyle change. But what about job opportunities? We work with employers in all parts of NZ – big and small. You might be surprised by the size and scale of some of the regionally based organisations whose successes fly completely under the radar. And the smaller population means there’s less competition for that ideal job you’re interested in. So don’t overlook the opportunities and lifestyle advantages that regional living can provide – it might just be the perfect fit for you.
