I chose New Zealand due to its calm and relaxed lifestyle, as well as its stunning natural beauty. The decision to move was driven by a desire to enjoy a high quality of life and immerse myself in a beautiful and welcoming environment.

Most challenging part

One of the most significant challenges I faced was securing a job from overseas and being shortlisted for an interview. Fortunately, the job opportunity with Gisborne District Council, which I was keenly interested in, was advertised through Peak Recruitment. Their pre-interview process was incredibly thorough and insightful. They recognized that the planner role available in New Zealand closely matched my previous experience in Sri Lanka. The first year in New Zealand came with its own set of challenges as I adjusted to a new environment. What you’re enjoying

A month after my arrival, my family joined me, and we have since enjoyed exploring North Island. As a family that loves to travel, we have had the pleasure of visiting numerous places and experiencing the rich Māori culture.

We have been fortunate to make many new friends, particularly within the Māori community, and have found the local people to be exceptionally warm and welcoming. The staff at Gisborne District Council have been particularly supportive, creating a positive work environment that has greatly enhanced my job satisfaction. Their willingness to engage in extra activities and provide support has made my work experience extremely rewarding.

My three daughters have also benefited from our move. They have made wonderful friends from various parts of the world, which has provided them with a valuable opportunity to understand and appreciate different cultures. Despite initial challenges with the New Zealand accent, their teachers offered exceptional support, helping them adjust and thrive in their new environment.

Advice to others considering NZ

For anyone considering moving to New Zealand, I highly recommend it. The country offers a safe and beautiful environment with no dangerous animals, no snakes and the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming.
